Mariupol, a large city of about 500,000 people, is located about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Russian border and about 35 kilometres from Novoazovsk, which has been taken over by pro-Russian rebels. Ukraine was poised to strike a Kremlin-backed ceasefire deal with rebel leaders after almost five months of deadly conflict that has threatened to tear apart the former Soviet state and plunged East-West relations to post Cold War lows.
