Over a four-decade career, Australian singer and writer Nick Cave has sought to probe the nature of both God and sexual desire through his frank, intense songs. Even though he left Australia in 1980, Cave says that Wangaratta -- his hometown in the southeastern state of Victoria, whose population now stands at 17,000 -- still "inspired pretty much everything" in his artistic vision. "It definitely had a huge impact on the kind of environments in my songs," Cave said.
