US durable goods orders plunged in August, driven by a sharp drop in the volatile transportation sector, official data released on September 25, 2014, showed. New orders for manufactured durable goods in August dropped 18.2 percent to $245.4 billion, the Commerce Department said. It was the first decline after two consecutive monthly increases, including July's spectacular 22.5 percent jump on civilian aircraft orders as Boeing's order book quadrupled from June. Transportation equipment drove the August decline, diving 42.0 percent to $76.8 billion. Civilian aircraft orders sank 74.3 percent, motor vehicles and parts orders fell 6.4 percent and defense aircraft slipped 0.6 percent. AFP PHOTO / Paul J. Richards / FILES
