The new European Union Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete, from Spain, attends his hearing at the European Parliament in Brussels on October 1, 2014. The men and women picked to run the EU for the next five years are facing a grilling by the European Parliament this week. Canete faces accusations of a conflict of interest through ties to the energy industry. Seventy-six members of the European Parliament have signed a petition against Canete's nomination, whilst a "Stop Canete" protest by the Greens and the radical left was scheduled outside parliament before his hearing.
