IRAQ-CONFLICT
A group of Iraqi civilians take a boat from the Sunni town of Dhuluiyah, some 75 kilometres (45 miles) north of Baghdad, to the Shiite city of Balad on October 4, 2014 after Islamic State (IS) group fighters earlier destroyed the two bridges connecting the two towns. IS has seized control of large parts of Syria and Iraq, declaring a "caliphate" in June and imposing its harsh interpretation of Islamic law, but their progress was slowed by new strikes from the coalition of Washington and Arab allies.
