DRCONGO-HEALTH-WATER-CHOLERA
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY LUCIEN KAHOZI
Hospital director, Doctor Jean-Pierre Kitenge (R), takes care on September 10, 2014 of a patient suffering from cholera at the Kalemie hospital, in the southeastern Congolese province of Katanga, more than 700 kms north of the provincial capital Lubumbashi. Since August 11, 2014 the cholera epedemic has killed 72 persons in the region -- more than the Ebola virus with an official death toll of 43. Kalemie, a city of half a million has no running water, and people get it in the Lukaga river that runs into Lake Tanganyika. To avoid the spread of the disease, authorities have, in vain, banned bathing, washing dishes and clothes in the lake and the river. Cholera is spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with human faeces. AFP PHOTO / LUCIEN KAHOZI
