CANADA-ATTACKS-POLITICS-SECURITY

(FILES) File photo dated 13 March, 2013 shows House of Commons Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Vickers drew a gun and took down an assailant on 22 October, 2014 after a man shot and killed a Canadian soldier who was mounting a ceremonial guard at a war memorial in downtown Ottawa before storming into the nearby parliament building. Shots rang out as the shooter rampaged through the halls of the building, and Vickers has been credited with taking him down. Applause rang out at the Commons in Ottawa 23 October, 2014 for the guardian of the cradle of Canada's democracy -- who bears the assembly's ceremonial mace -- followed by a prayer, the national anthem, a moment of silence.
