RDCONGO-RELIGION-CHRISTIANITY-TRADITION-SOCIETY
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY HABIBOU BANGRE
Chinois (Chinese) Mbelechi Msoshi, a freelance journalist, sits at his computer on October 22, 2014, in the Congalese capital, Kinshasa. In this former Belgian colony, Christian names are common. In the early 1970s, then dictator Mobutu Sese Seko (1965-1997) began a process of returning the country to its African roots, forcing the abandonment of such religious based names. So along side Mary and Joseph, new names immerged with biblical roots such as Plamedi (wonderful plan of God), Merdi (Thank God or wonder of God), Glodi (Glory to God), and Promedi (Promise of God).
