ECUADOR-UN-COURT-OIL-COMPANY-CHEVRON-ENVIRONMENT-POLLUTION

The local leader from a Secoya indigenous community, Javier Piaguaje (C), and the lawyers of Ecuadoren indigenous people seeking compensation from oil giant Chevron, Pablo Fajardo (L) and Pablo de la Vega, offer a press conference about a lawsuit filed today against the oil company and its CEO John Watson, before the International Criminal Court in The Hague, during a press conference in Quito on October 23, 2014. The indigenous people from Ecuador's oil-rich Lago Agrio in the eastern region of Oriente in the Amazon have long sought compensation for pollution by US oil company Texaco between the 1970s and early 1990s.They allege that Texaco, which was bought by Chevron in 2001, dumped oilfield waste that polluted large swathes of the jungle region, causing widespread sickness and a surge in deaths from cancer.
