US-SPACE-MARS-PSYCHOLOGY
TO GO WITH AFP STORY US-SPACE-MARS-PSYCHOLOGY BY KERRY SHERIDAN
This April 25, 2013 photo provided by the University of Hawaii at Manoa shows the HI-SEAS (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation) habitat. On October 15, 2014 six researchers began an eight-month program in a domed habitat situated in an abandoned quarry on the northern slope of the Mauna Loa volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii to simulate life on a Martian outpost. The program focuses on the study of social, interpersonal and cognitive factors that affect team performance during long-duration space travel, such as missions to Mars.
