Leaders of Basque political parties and unions released a letter to the French government presenting several proposals to boost the peace process in the Basque country. The Basque separatist group ETA declared on October 20, 2011 of a "definitive end to armed activity", after a four-decade campaign of bombings and shootings for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest France.
