TO GO WITH AFGHANISTAN-DISARM
An Afghan man inspects an old Russian-made heavy machinegun before it is handed over to the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Re-integration programme (DDR) in Herat, 11 July 2004. Two thousand ex-mujahedin fighters laid down their weapons in the western Afghan city as part of a disarmament drive in a country facing renewed violence ahead of its first post-Taliban polls. In Herat, over 40 percent of 6,000 men loyal to powerful regional warlord Ismail Khan will be disarmed before the October 2004, vote according to the DDR. According to UN figures some 10,360 Afghan troops have now been disarmed, short of the target of 40,000 troops and the pre-poll removal of heavy weapons from private hands set when President Hamid Karzai launched the project in May 2004.
