PARAGUAY-STEVIA

A farmer works in a plantation of stevia on October 18, 2014 in Guayaibi, 175 km north of Asuncion. Following the approval by the U.S. and European health authorities of the natural stevia as a replacement for the chemical sweeteners, Paraguay decided to extend the cultures of the plant, known in Guarani as Ka-a Je-e, from the present 2,000 hectares to 10,000. Stevia sweetens 300 times more than sugar cane and Coca Cola and Pepsi multinational companies have already launched their own new green stevia sodas. AFP PHOTO/Norberto DUARTE
