FRANCE-POLITICS-PARTIES-UMP-SARKOZY
Nicolas Sarkozy, former French President and candidate for the presidency of France's right-wing main opposition UMP party, smiles as he addresses supporters during a public meeting in Paris on November 10, 2014. Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to draw a "new path" for the UMP at a large public meeting in Paris, where he will attempt to reinvigorate a party torn by internal struggles and financial scandal. France's former UMP prime minister Francois Fillon on November 9, 2014 complained of a "plot" against him, amid media revelations he sought to interfere in legal procedures against former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a rival in the right-wing opposition. Le Monde claimed that Fillon had in June urged President Francois Hollande's chief of staff to push along the several legal complaints against Sarkozy. "Hit him quickly, hit him quickly ... you know if you don't hit him quickly, you'll see him come back, so do it," Fillon is alleged to have told Jean-Pierre Jouyet, Hollande's right-hand man at the Elysee Palace.
