TURKEY-SYRIA-CONFLICT-KURDS

A combination of pictures taken on November 11 and 12, 2014 in Suruc, in the Turkish southeastern Sanliurfa province, shows Kurdish women posing while holding pictures of their sons who died during the battle against Islamic State (IS) insurgents in the Kurdish Syrian town of Kobane, also known as Ain al-Arab. Kobane has been under siege from IS since September 16, 2014 and more than 1,000 people have been killed in the fighting, most of them jihadists. By October 2, IS succeeded in capturing 350 Kurdish villages and towns, creating a wave of some 300,000 displaced Kurds, most of whom fled across the border into Turkey. Kobane has become a symbol of resistance against jihadists who control swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq, committing brutal abuses against rivals and the local population.
