NETHERLANDS-RACISM-DISCRIMINATION-CHRISTMAS

A person dressed as a white-faced ''Clown Pete'' gestures during celebrations to mark the arrival of Sinterklaas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus (Saint Nicolas) and dozens of Petes in Gouda, The Netherlands, on November 15, 2014. For the first time, the mayor introduced other coloured Petes, angering many. The figure of Black Peter, the traditional black-faced companion of Saint Nicolas during the Sinterklaas or Saint Nicolas festival celebrated on the evening of December 5, has become the subject of much controversy in recent years as some people believe it to be a racist caricature. The character first appeared in its current form in an 1850 book by Jan Schenkman and is commonly depicted as a blackamoor from Spain.
