PERU-ENVIRONMENT-UNREST-CHOTA

Julia Perez, wife of slained indigenous Ashaninka tribe leader Edwin Chota, killed in September by members of a logging mafia, participates in a press conference in Lima on November 17, 2014, together with other three women who lost their husbands in the same incident in the Peruvian jungle. The women reported that they are threatened and that investigations are paralyzed, and demand the government to give land ownership to their people. Their press conference happens at the same time Diana Rios, daughter of one of the four leader accepted in New York City an environmental award from the Alexander Soros Foundation on behalf of her community of 33 Ashéninka families, who live in the dense rainforest that straddles the border between Peru and Brazil. At least 57 environmental activists have been murdered in Peru since 2002, a rights group said Monday, criticizing the killings as the country prepares to host major UN climate talks.
