DRCONGO-HEALTH-CHOLERA-CHEMISTRY
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY HABIBOU BANGRE
Congolese housekeeper Emerance Twendwe weighs on November 14, 2014 salt at the Maman Uzima Association headquarters in the southeastern city of Kalemie before dissolving it with water and running it through electrolysis to turn the mixture into chlorine to fight cholera. Nearby Lake Tanganyika is the only source of water for the 400,000 residents of Kalemie and a bacteria reservoir for cholera. Water chlorination helps prevent cholera, which is transmitted by ingesting food or drink contaminated with human waste. It causes diarrhoea, dehydration and death if let untreated.
