GERMANY-HISTORY-NAZI-ATTEMPT-TRESCKOW
This handout picture shows German army officer Henning von Tresckow (5th L) in 1943 during a staff meeting on the east front with (L-R) Hartmann Graf von Matuschka, Berndt von Kleist, Georg Schulze Buettger, Tresckow, unknown, unknown and Fabian von Schlabrendorff. Von Tresckow was one of the members of resistance planning the assassination attempt against Hitler on 20 July 1944. The July 20 Plot was a failed coup d-etat initiated by officers of the Wehrmacht. Leader of the plot was Count Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg who planted a bomb during a staff meeting with Hitler on 20 July 1944. Though the bomb went off, Hitler was not killed. Von Stauffenberg escaped the blast but was captured and executed the same day. The assassination attempt of 20 July 1944 marked the end of many years of efforts by top administrative officials and members of the military to change the course of the war from the centre of power by putting an end to Hitler-s leadership.
