This NASA ASTER image released November 25, 2014 shows Ellesmere Island, part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut with the most northerly point of land in Canada. Inhabited since about 2000 BC, its current population is less than 200. Large portions of Ellesmere Island are covered with glaciers and ice, as seen in this image of a portion of the north-central part of the island. The image was acquired July 29, 2000, and covers an area of 48 by 63 km, and is located at 81.2 degrees north, 80.6 degrees west. With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region and its high spatial resolution of 15 to 90 meters (about 50 to 300 feet), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor the changing surface of our planet. ASTER is one of five Earth-observing instruments launched December 18, 1999, on Terra. The instrument was built by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. A joint US/Japan science team is responsible for validation and calibration of the instrument and data products.
