PERU-POLLUTION-RIVERS-MERCURY-FILE
Fishing boats lie at sundown tied up on the shore at a port in the Puerto Maldonado city on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, an area that has been considered the Peruvian capital of biodiversity, some 1,660 kilometres (995 miles) southeast of Lima on October 3, 2014. In a few years, illegal mining and deforestation by the advance of man new has wiped out about 58 thousand hectares of forested areas, poisoning rivers with 30 to 40 tons of mercury being dumped into its basins every year. Recent study of mercury contamination in humans determined 78% of adults in the samples was obtained, contained mercury levels 2.7 times more than allowed by the WHO. AFP PHOTO/CRIS BOURONCLE
