BRAZIL-RUBBER-TAPPER
White sap runs along a gash made by rubber tapper Raimundo Pereira on a rubber tree in a forest in Xapuri, Acre State, in northwestern Brazil, on October 8, 2014. The sap collected by Pereira is destined for the nearby factory at Xapuri, the world's only producer of contraceptives harvested from the latex of a tropical forest. The Natex factory was founded in 2008 at Xapuri in the Amazonian state of Acre in Brazil's far north, a place known for the struggles of famous conservationist Chico Mendes, a rubber tapper gunned down in 1988 by local ranchers engaged in deforestation.
