LEBANON-SOCIETY-ARCHITECTURE-BRITAIN

TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY RANA MOUSSAOUI

In a picture taken on November 24, 2014, British artist Tom Young speaks during an interview in Ras Beirut's landmark Rose House, an Ottoman villa overlooking the Mediterranean in the heart of the Lebanese capital, that is a lonely reminder of Beirut's romantic past. Young was able to convince the owner of the architectural gem, Hicham Jaroudi, to turn it into an art centre until December, and then Jaroudi plans to make the building a museum "to preserve the historic character of Beirut."The Rose house is a rare survivor not just of the 15-year civil war that claimed so many of its historic mansions, but the building boom that came with peace from 1990.
