The US-led NATO force in Afghanistan closed its combat command centre December 8 in preparation for the end of operations later this month after 13 years of fighting the Taliban. NATO's mission will change on December 31 from combat duties to supporting the Afghan army and police, who have taken on the responsibility for suppressing worsening Islamist violence nationwide.
