US-MILITARY-DEFENSE-JLENS

In this December 15, 2014 photo released by the US Army, personnel oversee the inflation of an aerostat Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System (JLENS) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. JLENS provides national command authorities with increased situational awareness and early warning detection against possible threats. Two unmanned helium-filled aerostats to be deployed this winter, will be tethered to concrete pads four miles(6.4km) apart. They’ll float at an altitude of 10,000 feet (3048m) in a planned, three-year test. One will use radar to continuously scan in a 340-mile radius, roughly from Norfolk, Virginia, to upstate New York. The other will carry precision radar enabling controllers on the ground to pinpoint targets. AFP PHOTO / HANDOUT / US ARMY / Sgt. Ronald Sellinger / Released
