Rescuers battled in the dark today to save nearly 300 passengers trapped on a burning Italian ferry as coastguards reported the first death in the high-seas drama. The death toll from the disaster in which a car ferry caught fire in a heaving Adriatic Sea rose to seven with the discovery of two more bodies soon after the 24-hour operation to evacuate the stricken Norman Atlantic was completed in the early afternoon.
