The European Court of Human Rights began on January 7 examining the fate of Vincent Lambert, who suffers from irreversible brain damage and is in a chronic vegetative state since a serious road accident in 2008. While his wife, nephew and doctors approve a 'passive' form of euthanasia and the withdrawal of artificial life support, Lambert's parents, who are conservative Catholics and opposed to euthanasia, have refused to accept it and have fought several legal battles to keep their son on life support.
