German astronaut Alexander Gerst poses next to a photograph of the International Space Station after being awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by German President Joachim Gauck , during a ceremony at the presidential palace January 13, 2015. Gerst, a European Space Agency astronaut and geophysicist, was selected in 2009 to take part in space training. He was part of the International Space Station crew from May to November 2014.
