Italian President Giorgio Napolitano is to step down "within hours," well before the 2020 expiry of his term, Italy's Premier Matteo Renzi said today, setting the stage for an uncertain search for a successor. Napolitano, 89, announced last month he would leave office early, citing his age and health, after he reluctantly agreed in 2013 to serve a second term to resolve deadlocked parliamentary elections that year.
