Zvyagintsev's movie "The Return" is nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev's sombre social drama Leviathan, nominated for an Oscar in 2015, has sparked heated debate at home, with the arts minister claiming it blackens Russia's image. The film has not even come out in Russia, where it plays from February, but that has proved little impediment to the debate with some recalling the Soviet joke about the hate campaign against Boris Pasternak's novel "Doctor Zhivago": "I haven't read it but I condemn it."
