Reform Rabbis Gays
In this March 12, 2015 photo, Rabbi Denise Eger poses at Congregation Kol Ami, a Reform synagogue with gay and lesbian outreach programs, in West Hollywood, Calif. As a rabbinic student in 1980s New York City, Eger quietly started a group for fellow gay and lesbian students. The Reform Jewish movement has traveled a long road toward recognizing and embracing same-sex relationships. That journey has led this week to Philadelphia, where Eger will be installed Monday, March 16, 2015 as the first openly gay president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the rabbinical arm of Reform Judaism.
