Myanmar Midnight Inspections

In this Monday, March 16, 2015 photo, Htwe Yi, a retired housewife, stands in her house in Dala, suburbs of Yangon, Myanmar. Htwe Yi said most people were used to registering guests, including her own family. When a 17-year-old relative came to stay with her recently, she had to send him to the township administrator’s office to get permission first. For three weeks, her family had to register the boy every three days, until they relaxed the requirement to each week. In Myanmar a nearly a century old law empowers the state to decide what guests, if any, a family may have in their own home. Commonly referred as “midnight inspections” because they mostly occur when families sleeping, are still being employed and used to suppress dissent. (AP Photo/Gemunu Amarasinghe)
