Vatican - Homeless
Homeless person Kristof from Poland sheltering in the shadow of St Peter?s Basilica at the Vatican on March 25, 2015.The number of homeless around Saint Peter?s square has doubled in the past six months as the Pontiff makes a difference in the lives of so many people. Instead of trying to eradicate its homeless population the Vatican is actually helping them. Pope Francis has pledged to restore dignity to these persons by providing for their needs, all without judging them. And homeless people are migrating to the Vatican to spend each night in sleeping bags donated by the Church. Police officials say that the population of homeless in the area around Vatican City has also grown by about 1,000 individuals. Police have been instructed to leave the homeless alone. Recently the Vatican transformed a space off of St. Peter's Square formerly used as comfort rooms for pilgrims into showers and barbershop facilities for the homeless. The three showers are open everyday except Wednesdays during the Pope?s general audience. Haircuts are on offer every Monday, with students from a Rome hairdressing school and local barbers offering their services for free. Each person who uses the bathroom receives two free kits containing a change of underwear, a towel, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and a razor and shaving cream for men, donated by various companies and individuals. Helping the homeless has been a particular priority for Pope Francis. Photo by Eric Vandeville /ABACAPRESS.COM
