MUMBAY - NIGHT RAT KILLERS - SANITY

The Night Killers Of Mumbai keep a city of 13 Million safe from Plague & Leptospirosis using a unique Method which is remnant of British Colonial rule.
Every night about midnight Night Rat Killer Javed Sheikh sets out on his job to kill the rats. His target is to kill 30 rats per night. He gets his sons along so that they can get on hand's training in killing rats.
Mumbai, with Asia's largest slum population and a sea port where cargo from around the world are disgorged, is an ideal breeding ground for rats. The city plays host to millions of rats, carrying the fleas which can cause deadly epidemic diseases like Bubonic plague and Leptospirosis and hence pose a danger to the bustling city's 13 million population. The control of the rat population sits on top of the priority to-do list of the Municipality, especially during the Monsoon months from June to September. This year alone in 2015 , in the last 1 month of Monsoon about 16 people have already died of Leptospirosis in Mumbai’s Hospitals.
In a unique way of combating the problem, which is a remnant of the British colonial rule, the city has set up a troop of Night Rat Killers (NRK), a team of 44 men who use sticks to kill the rats to clear Mumbai’s streets of these diseased vermin. These civil servants hold the job of having to kill a daily quota of 30 rats each. In return, they get a small house to stay and a permanent job with the Government. They are paid between Rs.10000 to Rs.12000 ($200-250) a month. Each night across Mumbai 44 NRKs will kill approximately 1350 rats, making an average of 3,75,000 rats killed each year. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation has tried all the conventional means to curb the population of rats like smoking rat holes, poisoning and trapping nets. But nothing has been as successful as NRK’s so much so that 85% of the total rats killed in Mumbai are by NRK’s.***
