AUSTRALIA-ANIMALS-ANTS
Monash University researcher Elissa Suhr holds up a vial of Argentinan ants in Melbourne, 12 August 2004, which have created a giant ant colony 100 kilometres (62 miles) across, under Australia-s southern city of Melbourne, scientists have said. Suhr said the supercolony of Argentine ants was threatening the native biodiversity in Australia-s second largest city. Suhr also said the introduced pest-s natural aggression kept numbers under control in its native country but the genetic make-up of the ants found in Australia had mutated allowing them to cooperate to build the supercolony.
