IRAQ-POLITICS-CONFERENCE
Sharif Ali bin al-Hussein, the pretender to the Iraqi throne and the head of the constitutional mornachist movement, speaks with unidentified delegates during a break in the meeting in Baghdad 15 August 2004. The conference, hailed as Iraq-s first experiment in democracy for decades, got off to a rocky start when hundreds of delegates walked out in protest against fighting in the holy city of Najaf. Before the first session ended in a storm of protest over Najaf, President Ghazi al-Yawar and Prime Minister Iyad Allawi hailed the conference as a first step to democracy and vowed to conquer those standing in their way. The conference will first hold working sessions to discuss the transition process, human rights, reconstruction and the issue of justice for those who suffered under Saddam-s former dictatorship. On the last day, delegates will select 81 members of a national council to advise the interim government as it paves the way for national elections in January 2005. AFP PHOTO/Ahmad AL-RUBAYE
