Yuliya Nesterenko of Belarus (L) and Sherone Simpson (R) of Jamaica, compete in the women-s 100m finals, 21 August 2004, during the Olympic Games athletics competitions at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Nesterenko won the gold, Williams took silver and Veronica Campbell of Jamaica won the bronze. Yuliya Nesterenko-s reign over the 100 metres may prove to be nearly as short as the space of time that she took to be crowned Olympic champion. With the golden generation of Merlene Ottey and Gail Devers drifting off into the sunset and the next era of Marion Jones, Torri Edwards and Kelli White damaged goods with Jones haunted by drugs allegations and the latter two serving bans there is a great need for this next one to brighten the horizon.
