SPAIN-MOROCCO-AFRICA-IMMIGRATION
The Guardia Civil patrols, 21 August 2004 near the security fence separating the Spanish enclave Melilla from Morocco. New illegal immigrants crossed the six meter fence which separates Melilla from Morocco, coming over from Mont Gourougu, Morocco. Spain is one of the main gateways to Europe of clandestine immigrants. According to official figures, 23 percent who make it to Europe come in through Spain. Thousands risk the hazards of the sea each year trying to get into Spain from Morocco or sub-Saharan Africa in frail open boats across the Strait of Gibraltar or via Spain-s Canary Islands.
