UCRAINA - IRPIN - CRIME DE RAZBOI
April 19, 2022, Irpin, Ukraine: I don’t want to live with hate in my heart,’ said Svetlana Kostyantyn about the Russian soldiers that killed her husband, as police exhume his body from a makeshift grave in their backyard in Irpin, Ukraine on April 19, 2022. Kostrya Kostyantyn, father of her child, love of her life. Taken away in an instant by a Russian sniper’s bullet as he was walking through a park to deliver food to an elderly neighbor. When his brother rushed to help, he too was gunned down. ..The family came to Irpin from the Luhansk region and Kostya got a job as a caretaker in the sanatorium. Nicknamed ‘Yasny’ (meaning light) he lived there with his wife and son Sergii 31. With the outbreak of hostilities in the Russian invasion Kostya’s older brother Sasha began staying with them. ..In the morning of March 16 Kostya went to take food to an old man he knew on Gogol Street and three minutes after he left, the family heard gunshots. Sasha ran after his brother and a few minutes later shots rang out again. Sergii and Svetlana were afraid to go out but three days later she found the strength to search. Russian soldiers showed her where both were killed in the park and gave permission to take the bodies. The soldiers did not allow her to bring her son to help, but after lengthy persuasion and conditions to put white ribbons on their sleeves, they were able to take Kostya’s body in a wheelbarrow. Sasha was too heavy and they did not have enough strength to load him onto a cart. Russians refused to help them. They buried Kostya behind their house. ..Two weeks later Svetlana sat at her table as smoke from a tea pot enveloped them for a lengthy interview with police investigating war crimes as his body was exhumed. Irpin was recently liberated, leaving the wreckage of war, streets lined with bodies and reports of atrocities.
