SUDAN-DARFUR-DISPLACED PEOPLE

Sudanese women in the Internally Displaced Camp (IDP) of Mourni, the largest in the area homing over 70,000, 65 kilometers south east of El-Geneina in the Darfur line up to receive cooking oil from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) 13 September 2004. More than 500,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of an estimated one million in Sudan live in encampments in western Darfur. The Sudanese government has been accused of arming and backing Arab militias, known as Janjaweed, which have rampaged through the western Darfur region for the past 19 months. An estimated 50,000 people have been killed and 1.4 million more uprooted in a campaign against Darfur-s black African population, which began in February 2003. AFP PHOTO/Cris BOURONCLE
