FRANTA - VERDUN - MEMORIAL
VERDUN, FRANCE - MAY 11: A view of the Douaumont Ossuary, a memorial containing the actual remains of soldiers who died fighting the Battle of Verdun during World War I (WWI) in Verdun, France on May 11, 2024. The city of Verdun, where one of the bloodiest battles of the WWI took place, displays the traces of the war today with its cemeteries and monuments. A total of 40 million artillery shells were used in the 'Battle of Verdun', the longest continuous battle in history between France and Germany. Between 750,000 and 950,000 people lost their lives in the war, which started on February 21, 1916 and ended on December 18, 1916, and about 70 percent of these losses were caused by artillery fire.
