Pictures must credit: Bell A new class of aircraft combining the hovering ability of a helicopter with the high-speed of a jet has come a step nearer. US aircraft company Bell Textron has been given the go ahead to develop its concept called the SPRINT X-plane for the country’s US military. It has been selected by the USA’s defence research agency DARPA to create a prototype. When fully developed, the Bell X-Plane will be able to fly with a pilot or autonomously. It will have the capability to cruise at up to 450 knots / 833 km/h for a range of 200 nm / 370 km at altitudes up to 9,100 m. It will be able to carry payloads of up to 2,300 kg in a spacious compartment and is designed for a wide variety of missions. Picture supplied by JLPPA
