A shoebox-sized satellite is set to help with wildfire detection with the aid of artificial intelligence.
The Australian-developed satellite, named Kanyini, is due for launch later this year on Elon Musk’s SpaceX Transporter-11 rocket.
Kanyini is equipped with bushfire monitoring functions that will combine data collection from a device called a hyper-spectral imager.
The imager captures reflected light wavelengths from the Earth to create detailed maps of Australia’s surface with a ‘lightweight’ AI system.
An onboard AI system takes what the imager sees and analyses it to detect possible fire sites.
It is able to distinguish between fire smoke and cloud cover.
In tests, the system used almost 70% less energy to perform an analysis while detecting fire smoke 500 times faster than conventional processing at ground facilities.
The hope is that it can then alert emergency services in an early warning system before fire gets too much of a hold.
