September 12, 2024: NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured this remarkable image of the Extreme Outer Galaxy, a distant region on the outskirts of the Milky Way...The telescope observed newly formed stars, their extended jets of material, background galaxies, and red clouds of gas within the area, providing astronomers with unprecedented insights...The telescope’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), developed and managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), has played a crucial role in exploring this sparsely populated part of the Milky Way. Situated over 58,000 light-years from the Galactic Centre—far beyond Earth’s position, which is about 26,000 light-years from the centre—this area is known for its sparse stellar population...Astronomers used Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and MIRI to examine two molecular clouds, known as Digel Clouds 1 and 2. Webb’s advanced sensitivity and resolution allowed scientists to study these star-forming regions with unprecedented detail. These revealed young protostars (Class 0), stellar outflows, jets, and intricate nebular structures within the clusters..These observations were made during telescope time allocated to Mike Ressler of NASA’s JPL in Southern California. By using Webb’s powerful imaging capabilities, scientists can now examine star formation in the outer reaches of the Milky Way with the same precision as they can in regions closer to our solar system.
