LEBANON-SYRIA-TROOPS
Syrian soldiers gather 21 September 2004 in the Lebanese village of Aley in the mountains southeast of Beirut, with a picture of Syria-s late president Hafez al-Assad on the wall in the background (R). Syria started redeploying about 3,000 troops in Lebanon, with most of them due to return home, according to a high-ranking Lebanese army official. However, a full Syrian army pullout from Lebanon will only occur after a comprehensive Middle East peace deal for an Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Arab lands, Lebanese Defense Minister Mahmud Hammud told reporters.
