PERU-WOMEN-ADOLESCENT-MOTHERHOOD
Nadir (15) who lost her baby looks at Lesli Rupay-s in the Prenatal Institute of the Maternity Hospital in Lima October 24, 2004. The child-s father, also a teenager according to Lesli-s parents, refuses to recognize his daughter. According to Non-Governmental Organizations, (NGOs), though 29 percent of teenagers among 15 to 19 year-olds, with a partner, assure they were actively trying to avoid pregnancy, only 11 percent use modern contraceptives. NGOs say 25 percent of pregnancies in the country belong to adolescents, and among these, more than 50 percent occur in teenagers living in poverty or extreme poverty. Adolescent motherhood is causing great alarm within Peruvian authorities, due specially to the increase of girls younger than fifteen, who are getting pregnant mainly by the abuse of a close relative.
