CANADA-DEATH PENALTY-JAGGER
Death penalty opponent, US actor Mike Farrel attends a press conference 07 October, 2004 in Montreal, Canada. Opponents of the death penalty from around the world including politicians, diplomats and celebrities are holding their second world congress in Montreal this week. Although Canada does not have the death penalty, organisers are pointing out the symbolic value of the conference being held so close to the United States which holds presidential and congressional elections next month. The Montreal meeting will culminate with a mass rally against capital punishment 09 October with some 3,500 activists planning to dress in mourning black. The protest is meant to symbolize the number of people currently waiting in "death row" prisons around the United States, according to organisers. AFP PHOTO/NORMAN BLOUIN
