(FILES) This file photo shows a general view of an oil refinery as seen on the outskirts of the city of Basra 311 miles (500 kms) south of Baghdad 06 October 2004. World oil prices stormed above 54 dollars for the first time 12 October 2004, as strikes in Nigeria and Norway raised worries about possible supply shortages during the northern hemisphere winter. The price of reference light sweet crude for delivery in November rose to as high as 54.45 dollars a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest in the contract-s 21-year history.
US crude futures later stood at 54 dollars, showing a gain of 36 cents from Monday-s close. AFP PHOTO/Essam AL-SUDANI
