TO GO WITH AFP STORIES by Stephanie PERTUISET
With temperatures at -24 degrees Celcius (-11 Fahrenheit), Private Christopher Brewer (L), from Nova Scotia, and other comrades participate in winter camp training 14 October, 2004, in Alert. The Canadian military and scientific post was established in the 1950-s and is the most northern permanently inhabited place on the planet. Located on Ellesmere Island 817kms (507 miles) from the geographic North Pole, Alert is home to some 75 military and civil personnel who called themselves the " Frozen Chosen" and spend three to six months on duty at the station.
