CUBA-US-DOLLAR
Cubans queue at an exchange booth in Havana 26 October, 2004, after it was announced yesterday that the US dollars would no longer be accepted in stores on the island starting November 8. The new restrictions, that will affect Cubans as much as foreigners visiting the country, mark a sharp change in the country-s financial policies in response to what the government called hostile US policies toward the communist-ruled nation. Banks will stop conducting dollar transactions and companies or individual businessmen maintaining dollar-denominated accounts in them will have to convert them into convertible pesos. The Cuban Central Bank statement was read Monday over national television with Cuban leader Fidel Castro on hand, making his first public appearance since undergoing surgery for his knee after a fall last week.
